The Beano’s Dennis, Gnasher and Walter join Minecraft By Emily Thomas Newsbeat reporter

Minecraft players should be on the lookout for Walter “softy” and his stinky pants.

You can now add Walter, Dennis, the Menace, and Gnasher from The Beano to the PC version of the game.

Gnasher can be made a sausage by players and all of Dennis the tricks, including catapults and stink bombs are a possibility to use.

It’s part of the Beano’s bigger plans to expand into digital. The mod was created in partnership between the cartoonist and Frima Studios, which is a Canadian multiplatform game creator.

Mark Cotton, who is the Beano’s leader in digital transformations, explained to Newsbeat: “If you talk to any 7-11-year-old child, Minecraft is probably their most fervent love and passion.”

Mark says that the game is an extension of the comic and a way of making The Beano “a more holistic experience” for kids.

“Roughly 32,000 comics are sold every week of the Beano – so still an extremely healthy amount,” he says.

But it’s still far less than the two million magazines sold at the height of the magazine’s popularity.

“We are well aware that kids today are obsessed with digital,” says Mark.

“We must make The Beano a 360 brand that is where Dennis and Gnasher are everywhere kids are, rather than expecting them to come to our store.

“So we’re working on a number of initiatives over the next three to six months.”

Some of them include puzzle apps, interactive comics, and an “action 3-D game for children”.

The Beano’s publisher DC Thompson has already extended the brand’s reach to a television show, a photo-sharing application and YouTube channel.

    Grand Theft Auto?

The comic’s been in existence since 1938 and has plenty of adult fans. Also, could the Beano characters make an appearance in any adult-oriented games? Dennis the Menace in Grand Theft Auto perhaps?

“No. We don’t have anything to focus on right now,” says Mark.

“We are focused on the 7-11 year old digital product. At the moment digital is all about engaging with children and understanding their passions. minecraft-server-list.space

To do this, they’ve been working with a group of 10 seven to 11-year-old Beano and Minecraft fans throughout the development process.

    Minnie the Minx?

“We mostly asked children”If you were to put Beano into Minecraft What do you think?’

“This was the initial stage of what they envisioned. Their imaginations are able to go beyond what we can do at the moment.

“But they wanted to play pranks They wanted Walter, they wanted Gnasher They wanted to dress as Dennis and that’s what we’ve given them.

“We’ll continue to talk to them. We want to expand our reach and build Beanotown so that kids can be creative.

“Minecraft is so popular because it gives children the power. If we try to constrain the children and tell them what to do, they’d probably reject it.”

Are there any other characters who could be allowed to participate in?

“We definitely want to expand it,” says Mark.

“The obvious character and the one the kids have been wanting is Minnie the Minx so we’ll probably consider next.”
